Author Joe Hayes using microphone

Join us for a special family literacy event at Sundance Elementary on Thursday, March 7th, at 5:30pm featuring the return of the captivating storyteller and author Joe Hayes! Joe has been traveling across the country for over 40 years, sharing stories of the Southwest and pioneering bilingual Spanish-English storytelling. We are delighted to have him back at Sundance thanks to our NM-OST Clubs, Sundance Spanish Club and Art & Literacy Clubs!

With over twenty-five books published in both English and Spanish, including titles like "The Day It Snowed Tortillas" and "La Llorona," Joe has delighted and inspired children in thousands of schools. He was the resident storyteller at the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe for 39 years, and many parents and teachers of today's kids heard Joe's tales when they were children themselves. Joe Hayes is known for demonstrating that sharing stories is a natural human joy, delightful for both the listener and the teller, and an important learning experience for children.

Sundance students will engage in an age appropriate story from Joe’s books and discussions on culture, writing, publishing, storytelling, and career choices. Additionally, each group is given a follow-up writing challenge and encouraged to send their stories to Joe.

Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy Joe Hayes' storytelling with your family at our free literacy event for all ages! All are invited! Books will be available for purchase at the event. We can’t wait to see you there!

map of new routes

Beginning March 18, 2024, there will be NEW drive up and drop off routes at Sundance.

Pre-K and Kindergarten pickup will use the loop from Sundance Road into the main Sundance Elementary parking lot. This will be used for pre-k and kindergarten ONLY. There will be NO pickup of older siblings in this loop.

The other route will have families use Sundance Road and take a left at the back of the SE property (behind the playground and field area). Follow the road where you will eventually turn left onto Santa Fe Street and follow the loop to Huning Ranch Loop. This route is for pre-k and kindergarten WITH siblings in 1st to 6th grade.

If you have any questions, please give us a call.

Returns to Sundance Elementary

Heart

The American Heart Association’s (AHA) Kid’s Heart Challenge (KHC) returns to Sundance Elementary after a 1-year absence. KHC is a great opportunity for our students to work on getting their hearts healthy while helping others by raising money for those who don’t have healthy hearts! KHC kicks off with an assembly on March 18th, the day we return from Spring Break, and runs for three weeks until Friday, April 5th. All fundraising will be conducted online and parents have the option of utilizing social media to assist their student’s fundraising efforts. All students who raise $100 or more will get to dump a cup of slime on Mr. Hall our PE teacher at the Renaissance assembly at the end of the year. Students can get a head start by registering for KHC today using the AHA Schools app (which can be found in your App Store by typing "Kids Heart Challenge") or register online.

As part of KHC this year, AHA has partnered with the NFL to support improving health outcomes at home and beyond through the Hands-Only CPR education. Students that complete the Finn’s Mission (which includes watching a Hands-Only CPR video) on the KHC website will earn an entry for two tickets to Super Bowl LIX in 2025 and our school will be entered to receive a $10,000 fitness equipment makeover for every 18 students who complete Finn’s Mission.

What's Coming Up at SE

Principal

It’s hard to believe that the month of March is already upon us. February seemed to fly by! We were very busy in February, which likely contributed to that feeling.

Our Renaissance team hosted a beautiful Father Daughter Dance at Sundance in February. We welcomed
over 300 fathers and their beautifully dressed daughters. In order to accommodate the large crowd we
doubled our photographers in the photo booth and doubled the dance floor utilizing the gym and cafeteria- it
made for double the fun! Thank you to Renaissance Committee Coordinator Ms. Cheyenna Yates and the Sundance Renaissance committee for organizing another successful family event. Thank you also to our volunteer DJs Eddie Jaramillo and Crystal Martinez, and our volunteer photographers Eileen Cordova and Keith Quintana.

Thank you for attending your Parent/Teacher Conference. I hope they were beneficial for you and your child, and that the option of holding Zoom conferences allowed everyone the opportunity to attend.

This month we will celebrate Read Across America Week with fun theme days and special guest readers. Reading is such an important part of keeping students engaged and challenged.

I hope you all enjoy a productive and happy March. School will not be in session March 11th-15th for Spring Break. Enjoy this time and be safe.
